What an inspection covers
We check each piece of Ex equipment against its certificate and the zone it's installed in: protection concept, gas group, temperature class and protection level. Then we look at its condition: enclosure damage, flamepaths, bolts, cable glands, seals, earthing and anything that has been changed since it was installed.
Faults are recorded with the tag number, a photo and a severity, so your maintenance team knows what to fix first.
Inspection grades
| Grade | What it finds | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | Defects you can see without access equipment or tools | Missing bolts, damaged enclosures, wrong labels |
| Close | Visual, plus defects that need access equipment such as steps, or simple tools | Loose bolts, loose glands |
| Detailed | Close, plus defects that are only found by opening the enclosure or using tools and test equipment | Loose terminations, damaged flamepaths, incorrect components |
Types of inspection
| Type | When |
|---|---|
| Initial | Before new or modified equipment is put into service. Normally detailed grade. |
| Periodic | Routine inspections of everything in the hazardous area. Normally no more than three years apart. |
| Sample | A representative share of equipment inspected, where the history supports it. |
